Karaoke

Karaoke is also an invention, in this case a modern invention, that since it started in Japan it has not stopped spreading all over the world.

The word "karaoke" came from "kara" (in japanish "empty") and "okesutora" ("orquesta"). It's said that once, in a small music bar in Japan, the usual guitarist didn't turn up. So the desperate bar owner recorded some music and invited his customers to sing instead. He gave out song books and all customers, most of them businessmen who enjoyed their "After Office" meeting, found it very funny. The idea soon spread, and special karaoke machines were invented. The good in karaoke was that, however badly you sang, everyone applauded at the end. Because of this it was proved as the better way for stressed Japanese businessmen to relax.

Today, 20 years after it started in Japan, you can find karaoke bars all around the world. In China, for example it is so popular that in restaurants you can find several karaoke machines running at the same time. This machines are in some places really complete: they don't only give you the opportunity to sing, but also accompanied by a DJ, laser lights or smoke machines. You can really believe for a few minutes that you are a star.
